News of Ed Balls' decision to become an MP was released in gushing fashion to his former employers the FT. As the shy retiring Mr Balls puts it:
"Back in the 1990s, I thought the right thing to do was to support Gordon Brown in putting together the first successful economic programme for government in the history of the Labour party," said Mr Balls, who has never been known for his modesty. "But as has happened to people previously holding my kind of position, the right thing to do now is to move into the accountable world."
That will be the accountable world of standing in one of the safest labour seats in the country would it?
